20th Anniversary

Anticipation shifts
into the familiar,
the familiar
into contentment,
an occasional thrill
reminds
of the first time.

Like so many tender nights,
he reaches out expectantly,
wraps his arms around shoulders
that once shivered to his touch.

Tonight, she hunches down
into her nightgown of sadness
her once pliant body steams
like dry ice.

Talk to me,
tell me
what I can do.

He rolls back onto his sleeping side,
eyes shut tightly against his mourning.
How will it be
after another twenty years?
