    Pediatrician Kelley White worked in inner city Philadelphia and now works in rural New Hampshire. Her poems have appeared in journals including Exquisite Corpse, Rattle and JAMA. Her most recent books are Toxic Environment (Boston Poet Press) and Two Birds In Flame (Beech River Books.) She received a 2008 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant.

hair rinsed with vinegar
white straw in the sun
cut curls I never wanted
fallen, caught on thorns

Why does she starve Why did he give her
when she knows she should eat? just spit in her mouth?

that her mother will hit her? Where is she cut?
Why does she cut Can she put a band-aid
off her hair on her own? somewhere inside?

hide in the bathroom? any chance of remembering?
Why has she locked What will she tell
the one lock in the house? this small child at her feet

bring him to see her? every night out her window
Why did her mother to visit a man
call this man friend? that the neighbors don't know?

Why does the girl dream What does she eat?
of falling and flying? Why does she vomit?
Why does she fight Why does she hate
to stay wide awake? her body's new shape?
