Soundlessly atop oversized paws
they come tumbling into the room
that fills instantly to the brim,
their leashes tangled around each other
like tinsel on a tree, a half
dozen yellow plush toys. They are accustomed
to kids bestowing hugs and kisses
just for showing up; their inclusion
in the world enough to make you recall
Blake’s somber quandary over tiger
and lamb, to wonder how
these ethereal beings could possibly
coexist alongside the scope of misery
they have come to relieve.
