GV 29: Meditation; Women: The Power Paradigm by Bob Bryan January 16 2017 |
The date significant because it is five days before the historic Women's March on Washington- which expanded to all seven continents. Bob Bryan, in his interviewing and exploring, hit on many of the themes and the spirit of those who spoke.
"Don't let the smooth taste fool you, its about power," Ladee Dred explains through leopard dreams and passionate music." Three actresses/stunt women, two musician artists, a roller derby queen; they're not the submissive type."
These women speak from strength: a history of challenge, risk-taking, making their work and fun combine. Visually, there are themes: two small girls, twins daughters- a connection to a duality of women.
"I don't think it makes complicated, it makes us crazy, because we're always weighing two sides of the scale," says Ladee Dred
The variations of these six women are one way to see it, the similar struggles, " Working harder for less."
"Motherhood does not end the dream it just changes it, is another theme in the subtext. It is about personal power and caring for others, it's about risking, being scared and doing it anyway, always finding the way out. One if the women interviewed; Cilla , even though she has a unique perspective here, she was born in the outback, she still does it all, art, music, business and motherhood. She explains that she needs balance, positivity, empowerment. Some of the women were way deep, others not taking themselves or anything else, too seriously.
The philosophy and understanding they have only comes to some, later in life, 'they'see it, the precarious balance in their lives. Bob Bryan captures each of these with his questions: Power, self perception, doubt, identity, gender pride, control, choices, teaching, overcoming, strength and weakness (can't exist without each other). It's a revelation for men as to how women are inside, perhaps for some women as well, who hold back from the warrior inside themselves that wants something more.
