and did we howl? |
And did we howl? The barkeep said nothing
as I folded permission slips of high denomination
daring to use my license as far as it may take me.
And did we howl?
Bluster, rage, curse, avow, avenge, and aspire
to transfer a small part
of what our hearts could not hold?
And did we howl? Who was that siren
or was she just in my head
like the firetruck roaring
through the night?
And did we howl again at the moon
and blurring street lights?
I think the empty bottles
tell their brown broken tales...
And did we howl in neon cities
painted new and alive?
On the barbarous passions of indiscretion,
there are some that saw, listened and passed by.
And did we howl into the open desert?
Sand in the carpet, the ozone stench of the storm,
the desolate photographs of staring companions,
yes, they were all there in a stretching moment.
And did we howl in the silence of the miles passed?
The rocks will not remember us
as we shall not forget their beauty and permanence
with the sunlight running out behind us...
And did we howl to hush ourselves?
To hear the echoes return to our ears
those saying, yes,
the world is for the living.
