Winter Comes Early

Ice bedazzles on the roof
And the curl of wood smoke
From the chimney, the breath
Of a house the morning after
A hard freeze that left the
Bird-of-Paradise with a blanket
Over its green, sharp leaves

You walk to the gate, crunching
A path that was quiet yesterday
The birds so happy then
Are flying on, fleeing upper latitudes
And freezing tree limbs that wobble
As birds launch, weary wings
Beating the thick and thin air

Nothing is quiet this morning
Stubborn Venus on the horizon
Faint starlight frozen in space
Dawn’s light cutting through
The frosted luminosity
A frozen pond glows with it
The etched mirror of all we see
