bio

art by lizbeth palma

Kirby Wright won the 2018 Redwood Empire Mensa Award for Creative Nonfiction. His new book is The Queen of Molaka'i, based on the life and times of his part-Hawaiian grandmother. The book traces her wild teen years in Roaring Twenties Waikiki and follows her over to the west end of Moloka'i as she pursues love with a vet of the Great War.

Finnair Woman

My neighbor with red lips
Across the aisle
Is seized by writing.

Crimson-nailed fingers
Thrust a pen,
Spilling a riot of ink.

She scrawls ferocious,
Passion soaking
Through pages.

Her heart was touched.
A ballpoint whispers
This woman’s secrets.

She stares and smiles
At me, as if
Feeling my thoughts.
