Only the Whiskey River

after a line by Martin Espada

not the big rock candy mountain
not the cabin in the pines
not the nice warm boxcar
not the bed of flowers
under California stars

not the flashing neon sign
not the piano roll blues
not the jukebox in the corner
not the sawdust
on the hardwood floor

only the Whiskey River
flowing behind the counter
Jack Daniels
in a shotglass
Lone Star Chaser
sweating on the bar
